Globe Telecom signed several agreements with its Chinese partners worth US$750 million for the improvement and enhancement of its LTE technologies in the country.

These are among several deals signed during President Rodrigo Duterte’s state visit to China.

The agreements with technology partners Huawei Technologies, Nokia and Wuhan FiberHome International Technologies cover a period of 5 years.

“We are confident that our collaboration with Huawei, Nokia and Wuhan FiberHome will translate into a more robust Globe network that will meet the country’s future digital demands,” Globe president and CEO Ernest Cu said.

Among the agreements is the deployment of new LTE spectrum, with Globe partnering with Huawei for the implementation of the project in Luzon and with Nokia for the same in Visayas and Mindanao.

The project aims to widen Globe’s LTE coverage and improve indoor penetration through its estimated 4,600 cell sites in the country.

Globe, Huawei and Nokia also agreed to collaborate in modernizing Globe’s fixed line network to expand the capacity and ensure the future-proof capability of its corporate data network.

“This is a significant agreement with a longstanding collaborator,” said Mike Wang, president at Nokia Networks Greater China.

“We are committed to delivering technologies that allow operators to smoothly transit to intelligent, virtual networks and seamless connectivity, to change how people communicate and connect.”

Another memorandum of confirmation signed with Huawei and Wuhan FiberHome focuses on plans to build a fiber infrastructure to support Globe’s rollout of fixed broadband lines in households.

Globe aims to deploy fiber optics to 20,000 barangays by 2020 and provide ultra-fast internet access to around 2 million homes nationwide.

Huawei CEO Kevin Gao said through this cooperation, “we hope to provide high quality products and professional services and work with our Philippine partners to bring a better connected service to this country.”

“We believe that FiberHome’s expertise in telecommunications over the last 40 years will be of great value to Globe Telecom’s infrastructure build,” said Wuhan FiberHome International Technologies President Zhiqiang Fan.
