It was an odd bit of anticipation as the fighters got ready for their 12-round bout. Is Manny Pacquiao too old or does he still have that power?

As the fighters prepared to go to the ring Bridget Gonzalez did double duty singing both the Mexican and U.S. national anthems. The Word Choir sang the Philipine anthem.

The referee for the fight is Kenny Bayless and the judges are Dave Moretti, Glenn Feldman and Glenn Trowbridge.

The fight is minutes away.

Round 1: Pacquiao seems to have good movement through the first part of the round although Vargas was the first to land a punch. Vargas seems to be planted in the center of the ring allowing Pacquiao to circle his opponent. Vargas and Pacquiao exchange lefts although no damage is done. A very close round but a late shot by Pacquiao might have been enough to win the round. Times card: Pacquaio 10, Vargas 9.

Round 2: A clinch about a minute into the round allows Pacquiao to land some body shots with no immediate damage but those add up. Still not much action. Pacquiao connects after some wild punches by Vargas. With 29 second left in the round Pacquiao connects on a solid left that sent Vargas to the canvas. The champion gets up but the momentum clearly has gone to Pacquaio. Times card: Pacquiao 10, Vargas 8. (Pacquiao 20, Vargas 17)

Round 3: The third round started slowly until Pacquiao lands a combination about a minute into it. Pacquiao is definitely controlling the fight and showing no signs of his age of 37. Vargas is just appearing slower. The round is closer than the fans sound, but Pacquiao still takes it. Times card: Pacquiao 10, Vargas 9. (Pacquaio 30, Vargas 26).

Round 4: If Vargas is going to have any chance he needs to get going before the scoring gets out of hand. Pacquaio is starting to stalk, looking to hit a spot. Vargas finally connects on a strong right that got Pacquaio’s attention. Vargas is starting to connect with some good rights.Vargas gets the round on the strength of one punch. Times card: Vargas 10, Pacquiao 9. (Pacquiao 39, Vargas 36.)

Round 5: Pacquiao, appearing a little slower, lands a left but is doing little damage. The right side of Vargas’ face is starting to get a little puffy. Vargas is starting to get energized but Pacquaio answers with some shots that excite the crowd but don’t really connect. Another good round for Vargas. Times card: Vargas 10, Pacquaio 9. (Pacquaio 48, Vargas 46)

Round 6: A lot of posturing through the first half of this round. Pacquiao is starting to connect on Vargas’s right eye with his left. Pacquiao seems to have regained some of his momentum in a basically quiet round. Times card: Pacquaio 10, Vargas 9. (Pacquiao 58, Vargas 55.)

Round 7: Pacquiao is starting to land some big punches, including a good straight to the face about midway through the round. Pacquaio is controlling the ring and it’s starting to be about rounds rather than punches. Times card: Pacquaio 10, Vargas 9. (Pacquiao 68, Vargas 64.)

Round 8: After a quiet first half of the round, the fighters got interested and started throwing punches with Pacquiao getting the advantage. The fighters banged heads, opening a cut over Vargas’ nose. He did land a strong right but Pacquaio comes back. Closer than it seems but the crowd might influence the judges. Times card: Pacquiao 10, Vargas 9. (Pacquiao 78, Vargas 73.)

Round 9: Neither fighter seems to be hurt but both are starting to tire. No significant punches landed this round. It’s as if both fighters were taking a breather. Ties go to the legend. Vargas is going to need to do something and soon. Times card: Pacquiao 10, Vargas 9. (Pacquiao 88, Vargas 82.)

Round 10: Pacquiao lands a combination early in the round that scrambles Vargas. A straight right to Vargas’ face connects. The blood trickling from Vargas’ face doesn’t seem to be a problem. The fight is getting away from Vargas and he likely needs a knockout at this point. Times card: Pacquiao 10, Vargas 9. (Pacquiao 98, Vargas 91.)

Round 11: Pacquiao comes out with a lot of energy especially considering it’s the penultimate round. Vargas catches Pacquiao coming in but doesn’t do any appreciable damage. A right hook from Pacquiao sends Vargas to one knee but it was ruled a trip, something the replay backed up. Vargas needs a KO if he is to win this fight. Times card: Pacquiao 10, Vargas 9. (Pacquiao 108, Vargas 100.)

Round 12: Vargas needs a KO and it doesn’t look like it’s in the cards. Pacquiao still has plenty of energy and Vargas doesn’t have the desperation of someone far behind in the last round. Pacquiao continues to control the action and has the look of a champion, albeit an old champion. Vargas does slip near the end of the round and goes to one knee but Bayless waved it off. A big win for Pacquiao. Times card: Pacquiao 10, Vargas 9. (Pacquiao 118, Vargas 109.)

The judges agreed with the fans, who were on Pacquaio’s side. Judges Trowbridge and Feldman agreed with The Times' card and scored it 118-109 for Paquiao. Moretti had it much closer at 114-113 for Pacquiao, who is the new WBO welterweight champion.

MANILA, Philippines – Senate Majority Leader Vicente Sotto III and neophyte Senator Manny Pacquiao opposed Senator Leila De Lima’s resolution seeking a United Nations-backed probe into the extrajudicial killings in the country.

Sotto said the UN has no reason to meddle with Philippine affairs.

“If you’re asking for my personal opinion, hindi ako supportive (I am not supportive). Bakit makikialam ang UN sa atin? Payag ba sila na makikialam din tayo sa kanila? (Why would UN meddle with our affairs? Will they allow us to meddle in theirs?)” Sotto told reporters on Wednesday, September 21.

Sotto said the UN should be the one to explain their stance on abortion, saying it is the “highest form” of human rights violation.

Sotto is strongly against abortion, contraceptives, and the Reproductive Health law.


“Eh di pakikialaman ko yung pagtuturo nila ng (Then I will meddle in their teaching of) abortion because to me, the highest form of human rights violation is abortion and the UN officials are supporting it and recommending it,” Sotto said.

Citing what he said was a speech of UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon, Sotto hit the UN for encouraging countries where abortion is illegal to “find ways to skirt strict abortion law.”

“For me that's the highest form of human rights violations. Tapos pakikiaalam nila tayo? And dinadamay nila ang mga namamatay sa drug operations ng police na nag-resist, (And then they will intervene with our affairs? And they're including those who died in drag operations because they resisted.)” Sotto said.

Sotto also hit the international body for only reporting on the killings and not on the 16,582 arrests.

“They are concentrating on drug operations of the police tapos dinadamay nila pati ang mga pinapatay ng mga gang war (and then they will also count those who were killed by gang wars). Bakit natin hahayaang na makialam ang UN dito? (Why would we allow them to intervene?” he said.

Sotto said De Lima’s resolution would be referred to the committee on foreign relations, which is headed by Senator Alan Peter Cayetano – a staunch ally of President Rodrigo Duterte.

'Very wrong move'

Pacquiao, for his part, said no other nation should tell the country what to do. For him, it is a “very wrong move.”


“It’s a very wrong move na gagawin natin. Walang pwedeng makialam dito sa atin, sa problema natin. Di pwede makisawsaw ang ibang bansa. Pangit ang makialam ang ibang bansa, (No one can interfere with us, our problems. Other countries can't do it. It's bad if they do so.)” Pacquiao said.

He defended President Duterte’s actions, saying he only wants the good for the Philippines. After all, he said the country needs discipline, which only Duterte could offer.

“Wala naman hangad ang ating Pangulo kung hindi kabutihan ng ating bansa. Di naman naging Pangulo yan para sa kanyang sarili. Ayaw nga nya ng corruption, ayaw ng drugs, kung baga ang ginagawa ng ating Pangulo ay para sa ating bansa,” Pacquiao said.

(Our President has nothing but good intentions for the country. He did not become President for himself. He does not want corruption, drugs. In short, all the President's actions are for the country's welfare.)

“Dapat talaga may disiplina dahil matitigas ang ulo. Kung sumunod lahat, di rin naman ganun magdisiplina ang pangulo,” he added.

(There really should be discipline because people are hard-headed. If everyone follows, the President wouldn't discipline like that.)

The UN has repeatedly cricitized Duterte’s stance on human rights – something that did not sit well with the President.

Duterte, in response to the UN, threatened to leave the international body but later claimed it was just a joke.

Duterte also earlier invited the UN special rapporteur to a public debate but retracted it later on.

Senator Alan Peter Cayetano on Monday singled out Senator Leila de Lima for allegedly “destroying the integrity and reputation” of the Senate for allegedly using the chamber to destroy the image of President Rodrigo Duterte.

“Senator De Lima, in her desire to destroy the President, is destroying the integrity and reputation of the Senate," Cayetano said in a privilege speech.

“Worse, damaging the image of our country and people worldwide,” added Cayetano, a close ally of Duterte, said.

Cayetano was the vice-presidential candidate of Duterte in the 2016 national elections.

Cayetano said De Lima was using the Senate Committee on Justice and Human Rights, which she chairs, “to go out after the President.”


“Ginagamit kasi ang committee, not for a factual finding on extrajudicial killings, but to go out after the President,” he said.

Last week, witness Edgar Matobato, a confessed hitman and member of the so-called Davao Death Squad, claimed that he killed several individuals on Duterte’s orders.

Matobato made the allegations during the inquiry on extrajudicial killings conducted by the Senate Committee on Justice, chaired by De Lima.

Cayetano’s privilege speech is still ongoing as of press time.

While Cayetano was delivering his privilege speech, De Lima walked out of the session hall.
In a brief interview, De Lima said: “I cannot stand it so I’m gonna deliver a privilege speech tomorrow instead of confronting him.”

Matapos ang privilege speech ni Sen. Alan Peter Cayetano ay hiniling ni Sen. Manny Pacquiao na mabakante ang mga posisyon sa committee on justice and human rights na pinamumunuan ni Sen. Leila de Lima.

"I move that the chairmanship and members of the Committee on Justice be declared vacant," pahayag ni Pacquiao ngayong Lunes.

Kaagad naman itong kinontra ng kaalyado ni De Lima na si Senate President pro-tempore Franklin Drilon at sinabing walang kapangyarihan ang senado na gawin ito.

Hiniling ito ni Pacquiao matapos batikusin ni Cayetano ang imbestigasyon ng komite na ginagamit umano ni De Lima upang siraan si Pangulong Rodrigo Duterte.

"Kitang kita po ang bias ng ilang senator sa laban sa krusada ng pangulo," pahayag ni Cayetano.

"Let someone else chair. In my past speech I said, I'm not even asking that she removed from the committee on justice only on certain hearing where we cannot expect cold neutrality," dagdag niya.

Nauwi sa pag-walk out ni De Lima ang privilege speech ni Cayetano.

Matapos ang pagpapabakante ni Pacquiao sa komite at ang pagkontra ni Drilon ay sinuspinde muna ang sesyon.
